What began as a vision to serve families in Freeport has grown into a place where physical training, personal growth and encouragement go hand in hand. Rilion Gracie Jiu Jitsu Freeport was founded by Rob and Lisa Braniff and their family in March 2021, originally as Freeport Jiu Jitsu, with a mission to share the life-changing benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the local community.
In 2024, the academy was honored to partner with the globally respected Rilion Gracie Jiu Jitsu organization. Through this affiliation, the academy has strengthened its ties not only with world-class academies across the globe, but also with families, organizations and neighbors right here in Freeport.
Rilion Gracie Freeport is supported by the Gracie family and their staff. The affiliation is led by Master Rilion Gracie, son of Carlos Gracie, who is widely recognized as the founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Coach Rob and his staff are mentored by Professor Marcelo Herz, a 6th-degree black belt, ensuring instruction rooted in both tradition and excellence.
Since opening its doors, the academy has served hundreds of families and continues to partner with military members, law enforcement, first responders, educators and civic groups—united by a shared goal of strengthening the community.
“We believe that Jiu Jitsu can help anyone, at any age and from any background, and that it can be an invaluable asset in life,” said Head Coach Rob Braniff. “Our academy includes students as young as four and others well into their 60s. It’s never too late to begin a journey of growth and life change with us.”

The academy’s Kids Program focuses on simple, foundational learning blocks designed to help children remember basic movements and concepts they can carry with them well into the future. “We want our students to build confidence early,” Braniff said. “For our other classes, we emphasize sound fundamentals first, then layer in advanced concepts.”
All programming at Rilion Gracie Freeport includes both self-defense and sport Jiu Jitsu training. This balanced approach, Braniff explained, helps develop well-rounded martial artists while reinforcing discipline, awareness and resilience.
Coach Rob is confident in the deeper impact of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. “The lessons we teach on the mats translate far beyond training,” he said. “Physical and mental health, problem-solving, perseverance, critical thinking and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations are strengthened off the mats as well.”
From the beginning, the mission of Rilion Gracie Freeport has been to be a faithful presence in the community—one that encourages individuals and families and reflects values of service, integrity and growth. That commitment, Braniff said, remains at the heart of everything they do.
When asked what he would say to those curious about trying Jiu Jitsu, Coach Rob offered a simple invitation: “Visit our website, schedule a free class and come see us. We’re always available to answer questions, and we look forward to meeting you and helping you and your family begin the journey.”
