So, you’re thinking about buying or selling a home or piece of property soon. Do you go it alone representing yourself mistakenly thinking that by doing so you will “save money” on the transaction or do you hire a professional real estate agent or Realtor to assist you in what is likely the biggest and most important financial transaction of your life? In most cases, you will realize a better financial outcome and experience a smoother, safer and less stressful transaction by hiring a professional. There are many factors to take into consideration. Here are just a few recommendations that can help ensure a successful outcome.

First, DO NOT interview just one candidate – interview at least three (3) agents. Second, avoid hiring a “friend” or family member, particularly one new to the industry. Your choice should not be personal, but rather about business and your best outcome. Look for a professional with at least a few years of experience who offers demonstrated skills in negotiating, marketing, networking and perhaps most important, excellent communication skills. Third, consider what education, professional and life experiences do perspective agents/Realtors bring to the table? Finally, choose an agent that offers the highest level of honesty, integrity and professionalism—one who shares facts, answers all your questions and maintains regular contact, letting you know what is going on throughout the entire process.
